Not only does BIFA celebrate British independent filmmaking by organising this awards ceremony, but they do a lot of work to support and celebrate British filmmakers.
One of their best opportunities and resources for independent British filmmakers is BIFA Springboard, a yearly pioneering programme designed to support writers, producers, and directors to continue developing their careers after the success of their first film.
One of the realities of the film industry is that even though a filmmaker might have had commercial or critical success with their first film, it can be quite difficult to keep the momentum going with their careers.
To make an independent film, you need money and support. BIFA’s Springboard programme is an opportunity for filmmakers to participate in workshops, seminars, and networking events that will help boost their career.
Funded by Film4, workshops are hosted by well-known organisations like Netflix, Curzon, MUBI, BFI, and more.
Their events go over important topics such as financing, sales, distribution, legals, company development, and career progression.
Originally applications were reserved for those who had already made it onto BIFA’s longlist categories for Debut Director, Debut Screenwriter, Breakthrough Producer, and the Discovery Award categories, but they are opening applications to non-longlisted filmmakers as well.
