How to Get into Acting Later in Life

1986 Views0 Comments

Many people dream of becoming an actor.  There seems to be a stigma that people who are older cannot get into acting, but that is simply not true.  No matter your age, you can take steps to dive into an acting career.

Everyone should feel inspired to follow their dreams, especially if you are discovering a new passion later in life.  If you’re interested in pursuing a career as an older actor, here are some tips to get you started in this highly rewarding and challenging career.

The first step is to develop your acting skills.  It’s okay if you’re starting from scratch, there are acting workshops and classes available in most cities.  You can even learn how to act from online videos!  Try joining a community theater group to hone your skills.  To be a successful actor you need practice and training. The key is to build up your knowledge, so you feel more confident in your craft.

The next step is to work on building a portfolio.  This should consist of headshots, a resume, and a showreel.  A headshot is a professional photograph of yourself that shows your look and personality.  Having multiple headshots means that you can have different looks, which can be helpful when you’re being casted.  Your resume should be a summation of your experience in the acting field, and a showreel is a video that shows your past acting experience.

It can be difficult to build a portfolio if you are just starting out, but you don’t have to spend loads of money to create a good one.  If you’re on a budget for headshots, try reaching out to new photographers or someone you know who is handy with a camera!  The more training opportunities you take, the more experience you will have, which will translate well in a resume or showreel.

The next step is to network.  Networking is a crucial aspect of the film industry. Try to go to industry events, join acting organizations, and connect with actors, producers, and directors.  This will help you learn about the industry and connect with important people, which can be invaluable.  Finding a community of actors, especially new ones, can make this daunting process much easier.

The next step is auditions, auditions, and auditions!  The auditioning process can feel quite intimidating at first, but they are a very necessary part of being an actor.  There are countless avenues to finding new auditions as a new actor.  Keep an eye out for casting calls and auditions, and prepare yourself by learning your lines.  The key with auditions is to stay persistent.  It can feel unmotivating to keep auditioning without booking anything, but if you stay at it, a role is bound to come your way.

The last and most important step is to stay positive.  The acting industry can be both challenging and rewarding.  Remember, if you are passionate about something, you owe it to yourself to pursue it.  Becoming an actor later in life can be incredibly rewarding, and with some learning, practice, and persistence, it is achievable to anyone.
