Mastering the Self-Tape: Essential Tips for Actors

In the modern acting landscape, self-taping has become a crucial skill for actors. Casting directors will almost always begin a casting process with a self tape. Here are three key tips to ensure your self-tape stands out:

1. Create a Professional Setup

Thanks to our iPhones, there is now no need for a professional camera! However a tripod and lighting setup can make a huge difference in the quality of your self-tape. Ensure your backdrop is simple and free from distractions—neutral colours work best. Natural light is ideal, but if that’s not available, use soft lighting to avoid harsh shadows. Always make sure you are framed correctly. Your framing should typically be from the chest up, allowing your face to be the main focus. Ensure you’re centred in the frame and leave some space above your head. This close-up shot helps capture your expressions and nuances effectively.

2. Be confident with your lines.

Being well-prepared with your lines allows you to focus on delivering a natural performance. If that means you have enough time to memorise the lines, great! If not – don’t worry, just focus on lifting the words off the page as much as possible to keep the performance engaging.

3. Don’t take it too seriously!

Remember, it is just a first read. Self tapes are a great opportunity for both you and the casting director to feel out if you are the right fit for the part. So don’t put too much pressure on yourself to try and give a completely perfected performance, that is for you to work on with the director! Use the self tape as a chance to get familiar with the character and have some fun. Good luck!

Check out this iconic self tape from Dacre Montgomery, a good example of ‘Don’t take it too seriously!’:
